Hornblower Series III

Earl of Pembroke underwent a transformation to become Hornblower’s ship ‘Hotspur’. In this picture work is being carried out on the ship at Charlestown to ‘mock up’ quarter windows on the stern.

Filming took place at sea in local Cornish waters. For the chase sequence Phoenix was used as ‘Retribution’ pursuing The ‘Hotspur’ (Earl of Pembroke).

As this photograph shows—it took considerable skill on the part of our Captains to manoeuvre the ships so close together.

Despite less than ideal weather — Square Sail take pride in the fact that not a single day’s filming was lost due to the inclement conditions.

After filming at sea with the Phoenix and Earl of Pembroke for 10 days, Square Sail’s shipwrights and riggers moved to set construction in Oxford where further filming took place (see picture in Set Construction section).
