CANVAS, ROPE AND WIRE WORK COURSE

A Four Week Workshop in Traditional Sailmaking Skills

Name of Course: Canvas, Rope and Wire

Tutors: Alf Readman and Josh Spencer

Duration of Course: 4 weeks residential. Classes are Monday to Friday, 08:30 – 17:00
Students lodge aboard one of Square Sail’s tallships based in
Charlestown Harbour.

Course Availability: Courses are limited to a maximum of 6 students.

Dates 2003: 15th SEPTEMBER – 10th OCTOBER

Nature of Course: The course is considered to be vocational and aims to introduce the
student to all the practical and theoretical skills utilised in traditional
sailmaking. It will, however, also appeal to the keen amateur or
anyone with an interest in learning canvas work and design, sail
repair, manufacture of covers, etc
.
Course Fee: £1,250, inclusive of:
All tuition fees
Lodging aboard ship
3 meals per day Monday to Friday
Basic tool kit consisting of knife set, marlinspike,
seaming palm, needles
All learning materials (i.e., canvas, rope, wire,
twines, stationary)

Subjects Covered: Introduction to canvas
Different types of cloth and their applications
Fabrication of a canvas two gallon bucket
Traditional and modern equivalents
Tools used in sailmaking and rigging

Fabrication of a ‘Sailmaker’s Kipper’ to include:
Patching
Flat Seaming
Round Seaming
Eyelets
Worked Holes
Darns
Rope/Wire Boltropes
Clews/Clew Patches
Tabling
Shark’s Mouth

Rope Work: Eye Splice
Long Splice
Short Splice
Matthew Walker Knot
Wall & Crown Knot
Manrope Knot
Star Knot

Wire Work: Admiralty Splice
Liverpool Splice
Worming
Parcelling
Serving
