COURSE PROSPECTUS
The Course Curriculum is divided into 23 Modules, sub-divided into further categories. In broad terms the following subjects are covered: Induction (First 2 Days) For the majority of you as trainees this will be your first introduction to traditional sailing vessels and workshop areas.
All topics listed below will be explained to you Rules onboard. Ships Galley - Cleaning routines. Safety alarms - where they are and what to do. Fire extinguishers / blankets – location. Electrical – awareness to hazards – battery conservation. Heads and showers – water conservation. Boatswain’s store. – Locating resources – keeping the area tidy. Engine room – Safety. Cabins – bunk spaces. Ordering of waterproofs, knives, tools etc. Issue of learning materials, task books, stationery etc Walkabout Square Sail Fleet. Introduction to the yard and workshops. This will involve a tour of the yard, harbour, workshops and clay drier. Explain the workings of the waterways, filling of the harbour, tidal restrictions, and lock gate. Walking tour of the leats. Introduce office staff – identify staff with office and job description. Health and safety issues, where to locate first aid boxes, and qualified first aid personnel. Introduction To Safety Aloft. Issue of safety harnesses. Preparation for working aloft. Going aloft with guidance. Once to the top. Out on the yardarms.
Introductory Lecture: Seamanship – What It’s All About.
Due to the nature of the course and the broad range of subjects covered, learning will be delivered through various different mediums. These can be broken down into the following categories: 1. Classroom Lectures 2. Practical Lectures and Demonstrations 3. Onboard Learning through the Work/Maintenance Programmes 4. Learning At Sea 5. One-to-one Tutorials Many of the course modules will overlap several categories, and the skills and knowledge contained therein will be constantly used and enhanced.
