Charlestown Harbour dockside to open to the public
Date: 13 Apr 2017
For the first time in its 225 year history we are proud to open Charlestown harbour's working dockside to the public. Locals and holiday makers alike love to visit our beautiful Georgian harbour and watch the daily action of a working port, with vessel arrivals and maintenance in action. The permission for visitors to experience the dockside will be a welcome addition to the already scenic environment of Charlestown that attracts so many.
The Historic Port of Charlestown Co.
The Historic Port of Charlestown Co. experience will be launched on 18th April by a shared event day with our neighbours at the Shipwreck Centre. Live music and the arrival of the trading vessel ‘Greyhound’ will all be taking place in the harbour on the morning of 18th.
Visitors are welcome to join and visit from 10 - 5 on tues 18th.
More launching over the next 2 months
The Historic Port of Charlestown Co. experience includes an old dockside trading post complete with paraphernalia of a historic port. Cannons and barrels will be part of the historic port experience around the end wall of the inner harbour, an area little used in the past.
A new vessel especially for the experience arrives into Charlestown port within the next few weeks. The Kajsamoor is trading ketch that will open its decks and hatches for visitors to explore on and below decks. (For tuesday’s event the Charlestown favourite ‘Phoenix’ will step in for Kajsamoor which has been delayed due to bad weather.
A fully rigged mast that sailing and rigging enthusiasts can try their hand at ropehandling is being erected on the harbourside. Come down to feature in your Poldark selfie!
Over the next few months , the experience will grow with exhibition pieces that outline the history of the harbour and its workings. We know this will enhance the understanding of Charlestown and its place in Cornwall’s vibrant history.
Film work continues
The film work will continue at Charlestown - there is space for all! We continue to work closely with production companies, on location, at sea on the Phoenix and within the harbour. The more than 100m length of the quay affords ample space for shooting, green screen facilities and film tank work.
